Chorus Piece " Esto les digo"

Im in the choir at college, and we're doing a Spanish song this semester.

I was curious about the translation, so I found it online.

It's a really beautiful song! Im so excited about singing it!

I thought it was intersting to compare this American choir's pronunciation,
to this Philippino choir's. Lol!

Philippinos:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7raPCbf9h0

The text is taken from Matthew 18:19-20.  Phrase by phrase, a literal translation would be:

"Esto les digo,                                         'This I say to you,
si dos de ustedes se ponen,                if two of you are put,
se ponen de acuerdo aquí en,             are put in accord here in,
en la tierra para pedir,                           in the earth to ask,
pedir algo en oración,                           to ask anything in prayer,
mi padre que está en el cielo,             my Father which is in heaven,
se lo dará.                                               will give it to you.

Porque donde dos o tres se reúnen en mi nombre,         Because where two or three are gathered in my name,
allí estoy yo,                                            there am I,
en medio de ellos.                                 in the midst of them. "

  9. It is such a beautiful piece! The two types of pronunciation of Spanish are important to mention and understand. The first choir is using Latin American Spanish and the Pilipino choir uses European Spanish (thanks to the colonization there by Spain...)
The most noticeable difference is the pronunciation of the letter "c" where Latin American Spanish uses an "s" sound and European Spanish is more if a "th" sound.

In deciding which pronunciation to use, I personally default to where the composer is from/ where the music was written. Kinsey Lange is an American composer located in Texas so I would think Latin American Spanish is the most appropriate pronunciation *for non-Spanish speaking choirs.

Choirs who speak their own dialect may use theirs as a way to connect deeply with the text!

    Yay choir!
